Pilot's Toolbox

I have been using Pilot's Toolbox for a few moths now and I find it as one of the most useful Apps I have on my iPhone. The best thing about it is that it works without GPRS/3G connectivity and is available in the air. The function I have been using the most this winter is the Runway Report feature. You simply tap in the runway state code and it decodes it for you into plain language. Pilot's Toolbox can calculate the recommended hold over times (HOT) for you when you are de-icing. Remember, this information is not for operational use!

Fly by Wire

Fly By Wire, by William Langewiesche, analyses the events and history behind the successful ditching of Flight 1549 into the River Hudson on 15th January 2009. This remarkable incident, in which none of the 155 soles on board were killed, inspired many in an industry that was at the time struggling with recession, forced lay-offs and poor industrial relations. The Captain of the aircraft became a quietly spoken hero who has since retired from flying and now concentrates on giving aviation safety presentations.

Fate is the Hunter

This is my favourite flying book. It is a chilling account of the dawn of commercial aviation through Gann's eyes. His initial training and line flying from Newark is a fascinating illustration of how things were before GPS and even VORs. The aircraft suffered reliability problems and the weather put pilots' lives at risk almost daily.
