USA Airline stocks rise after jobs report
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- An sharper-than-expected decline in first-time jobless claims last week gave a boost Thursday to airline stocks, breaking the sector's week-long losing streak.
The NYSE Arca Airline Index (XAL 37.82, +0.36, +0.96%) rose 1.3% to 37.94 points with all but one of its 13 components trading higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 10,082, +22.40, +0.22%) added a fraction to 10,093.5. Shares of US Airways (LCC 8.92, +0.14, +1.60%) jumped 2% to $8.97, United parent UAL Corp. (UAUA 19.89, +0.52, +2.69%) rose 1.8% to $19.71 and American parent AMR Corp. (AMR 6.10, +0.06, +0.99%) added 1% to $6.11.
Shares of JetBlue Airways (JBLU 5.64, -0.02, -0.35%) declined by a penny to $5.65 and Tam Sa (TAM 20.07, +0.20, +1.01%) fell less than 1% to $19.75. Initial unemployment claims declined by 31,000 to 473,000 in the week ended Aug. 21, while economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires predicted filings would decline by 10,00
