US aviation jobs have disappeared

United States

Recently released data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics indicates that nearly a quarter of all aviation jobs in the USA disappeared in the last decade.  The figures were established by comparing 1999 employment figues with the corresponding data from 2009.

The major loss of jobs was seen to be in the larger airlines or companies due to 'a lot of things happening in the last decade'.  The main factors affecting the industry include terrorist incidents, airline mergers, the crippling global financial climate and significant increases in the cost of crude oil.  There have also been bankruptcies of several airlines.

There has been some good news during the same period.  The continued growth of Low Cost Carriers has led to airlines such as JetBlue, Alaska and Southwest continuing to expand.
