It's all in the voice
A survey, carried out by www.sunshine.co.uk, has found that the majority of passengers feel most secure when the pilot speaking to them over the tannoy has a standard "Oxford" accent. At the other end of the scale, 76% of the 2000 people polled said they would not feel at ease if the aircraft was flown by someone with a Birmingham accent.
Four out of five of the travelling public prefer the classic RP, received pronunciation, accent and accordingly it would appear that over half of the comercial pilots flying oblige by putting on their best voice. The survey found that these aircrew used their 'telephone voice' when speaking on the public address system in order to come across more professional.
Scottish accents also scored relatively well on the poll with 72% fealing at ease with an Endinburgh accent.
The interesting thing highlighted by this survey, specific to job speekers, is the importance of speaking in a controlled manner during interviews and any sim checks undertaken. It will ensure you speak clearly and can be easily understood, which any employer will know is very important for an airline job.
