Asian Airline Suffers from Pilot Shortage
Budget carrier Tiger Airways is experiencing a shortage of pilots, prompting cancellation of several services.
Over 10 flights bound for Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Hongkong did not take off this week, according to information from Changi Airport.
Since June this year, the airline reportedly lost more than 20 pilots who left the company for better-paying jobs elsewhere. Another carrier, suffering the same fate, is Philippine Airlines, who is suing a group of 25 pilots, whose abrupt resignations in early August disrupted mainly domestic operations (see news).
Industry rumours have it that the airline has turned to Indonesian low-cost-carrier Mandala Air for manpower assistance, but both declined to comment.
The Tiger Airways spokesperson would only say: “We’ve hired enough pilots to backfill attrition. They are currently undergoing training and will be operational from September.”
