A pilot has been hailed a hero for landing a packed passenger jet at New York’s JFK airport and saving everyone on board.

All 60 passengers and four crew escaped unharmed when the plane came down onto the tarmac in a shower of sparks when its right landing gear became stuck.

It is thought the pilot balanced the jet on the left wheel then slowly eased it on to the right wing to slow it down.

Everyone on board was evacuated through the main door and was taken to the terminal where they were checked over and released shortly afterwards.
