Net Income rose from $11.4 million to $12.57 million between January and March 2010.

Turkish Airlines has joined Etihad and Emirates in offering increased services to African cities. This comes as the airlines compete to position themselves as the primary carrier linking Europe and Asia with the continent.

The Turkish carrier will introduce a new service on 13th June that will stop at Entebbe, Uganda, and Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The origin will be the airlines main hub in Istanbul.

Last Sunday, UPS furloughed pilots for the first time in the airline’s history. This comes despite the cost cutting measures put in place by the cargo carrier last year and the improving economic situation.

54 pilots were furloughed last week but the Independent Pilots Association (IPA) claims that more face the same bad news. The association that is responsible for representing 2800 UPS pilots, said that a total of 300 layoffs were expected.

The Singapore based legacy carrier has announced net profits of $216 million for the last financial year, that ended on 31st March 2010.

The low cost subsidiary carrier owned by Singapore Airlines, SilkAIr, also announced a profit of $31 million.  This is a near doubling of the operator's profits from of $17 million the year before.

Singapore Airlines recovered from a poor first half of the year, during which their losses reached $466 million.  Rising premium travelers impact the airlines revenues from October 2009 onwards.

A Boeing 757, operated by United Airlines, was forced to make an emergency landing last Sunday evening following a suspected fire in the cockpit, according to the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board).

None of the 105 passengers and seven crew members on board the aircraft were injured when the incident occurred. The flight was United 27 flying to Los Angeles from New York when the fire is reported to have occurred. The pilots elected to divert to Washington D.C.

The United States based carrier, Continental, announced this week its intentions to recall some of its furloughed pilots.

The airline currently has 147 pilots who were furloughed during 2008 and 2009. The reinstatement of 111 of them in the coming months is due to the airline taking delivery of two new Boeing 777 aircraft later in the year.
