Almost all regional pilots are seriously fatigued news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

An extensive survey of regional airline pilots, mostly in the USA but also in many other countries, has revealed that more than 96% regularly fly in a fatigued state.US company Alertness and Performance Management (APM) presented the findings at the recent Flight Safety Foundation European Aviation Safety Seminar in Lisbon, held jointly with the European Regions Airline Association and Eurocontrol.

Yesterday brought the end of the second walkout in as many weeks by BA cabin crew.  It was also the last of the current planned strikes, though the Union, Unite, refuse to rule out any further action.

The protests by the cabin crew have received a significant media attention not least because of the contrasting information coming from the two camps.  Both, the airline and Unite have tried to put as much information into the public domain as possible to weaken the position of their opposition.

The International Air Transport Association, IATA, has released its comparison of air traffic demand between February this year and 2009.  Passenger traffic had grown 9.5% while demand for cargo traffic was up 26.5%.

This is good news for the industry and is the second month in a row that demand has been on the increase.  It suggests improving health of the industry but the figures must be looked at in context.  For example, February 2009 was the worst affected month by the credit crisis, with passenger figures at an all time low.

A survey, carried out by www.sunshine.co.uk, has found that the majority of passengers feel most secure when the pilot speaking to them over the tannoy has a standard "Oxford" accent.  At the other end of the scale, 76% of the 2000 people polled said they would not feel at ease if the aircraft was flown by someone with a Birmingham accent.

Ryanair hangs up on in-flight mobile phone service news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

Ryanair has suspended its on board mobile phone service due to a disagreement with the provider of the OnAir system. The system had been in operation on 50 aircraft and the company had plans to introduce it to the remainder of their fleet following its success.

Passenger usage of the service had been increasing over the last 13 months since it was introduced. The system allowed calls at costs in line with current roaming charges, approximately £1.50 per minute on calls and £0.40 per text message.

Premium traffic has been on an 18-month nose dive since the financial crisis. Passenger numbers across the industry have been hit hard, but with people looking to save money first and business class travel has all but disappeared.

This has led to significant issues for legacy carriers who, traditionally, look to generate about 50% of their revenue from premium travellers. It has also led to a number of carriers reducing the number of the more expensive seats on their aircraft.

Boeing has completed the ultimate load wing up-bending test on the 787 static test unit, ZY997, at its facility in Everett, Washington.

The airframer says that it applied loads to replicate 150% of the most extreme forces the airplane could experience while in service, resulting in the wings being flexed upward by approximately 25ft (7.6m) during the test. In order to achieve certification, the US FAA requires aircraft structure to withstand 150% of limit loading for 3s.

At yesterday's second stage Open Skies meeting in Geneva a Memoradum of Consultation was signed by the US and European Union.  This is a step in the right direction but it has caused some disapointment that more progress wasn't made.

The International Air Tranport Association, IATA, released a statement in which Director General and CEO, Giovanni Bisignani, stated his disapointment that "significant progress on the issue of ownership" was not achieved.

RAF jets have been scrambled 20 times in the last year to escort Russian aircraft, the MOD reveal, while releasing pictures of the latest interception over Scotland earlier this month.

Defence chiefs released pictures of two Russian Blackjack bombers which were spotted in the early hours of 10 Mar.

Two RAF Tornado F3 fighters from 111 Squadron were scrambled from RAF Leuchars in Fife where they intercepted the Russian planes near Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.

The planned 6-day strike by TAP Air Portugal pilots has been called off after an agreement was reached with management.  The Civil Aviation Pilots' Union, who represent the airline's flight crew members, announced yesterday that pay and productivity agreements have been achieved.

Under the deal the pilots are entitled to a 1.8% pay rise, in line with other employees of the airline, in addition to a share of any savings achieved throught the companies cost cutting plans.

Virgin Galactic's VSS Enterprise First "Captive Carry" Flight news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

Virgin's tourist space rocket has completed its inaugural test flight over the Californian Mojave desert.

The spaceship was strapped to the mother aircraft for the three-hour test flight and reached an altitude 45,000 ft.

Two Airnorth pilots were killed on Monday, when carrying out engine failure drills in their Embraer 120 Brasilia aircraft.  There was no one else on board the 30-seat turboprop.  It is understood that the pilots were carrying out practice engine failures during the take-off roll at the time of the incident.
