American Airlines and Unions to talk news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

The first week of March 2010 will bring American Airlines face to face with representatives of the three different Unions responsible for their employees.  The talks centre on contract negotiations, and if succesful will establish working conditions at the organisation for years to come. 

Spain

The Spanish airline, Iberia, last week anounced record losses in 2009.  The carrier's net losses reached €273m and revenues were €4.41 billion, a 19% reduction.

The President of the Air Line Pilots Association, ALPA, believes it is likely we will see more airline mergers over the next few years.  Captain John Prater also hopes that over half of the 38 airlines with ALPA representatives would, with the support of the Unions, back any mergers that would result in job saving oppurtunities.  This possibility does not just relate to the legacy carriers as Prater believes it likely we will see some low cost carrier link ups as well.

Pilots join air traffic controllers on strike news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled at France's Charles de Gaulle airport since air traffic controllers began their strike.

Air France pilots began a weekend-long strike on Friday, the start of one of the country's busiest holiday periods, threatening to add to the chaos in France's airports on the fourth day of an air traffic controllers' strike.

United States

Senators in the USA have strongly urged the FAA to do something about pilots who regularly commute long distances to get to work.  This concern is largely down to the Colgan air crash of February 12 2009.  The first officer on board the Dash 8 Q400 had the night before slept in the crew lounge at Newark airport following a commute from the Pacific Southwest where she lived.  The Captain on board had also spent the previous night in the crew lounge, which was against the airlines policy, as he lived in Florida and had been on a two day tour.

Recently released data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics indicates that nearly a quarter of all aviation jobs in the USA disappeared in the last decade.  The figures were established by comparing 1999 employment figues with the corresponding data from 2009.

Ireland

Ahead of this weeks new working terms ballot of Aer Lingus employees, the Irish carrier has threatened that 1100 jobs will have to go if members do not accept the proposed cost-cutting plan.  The comments have caused an angry response from IMPACT, the Union respresenting the airline's pilots and cabin crew.

Southwest Airline Pilots Association opposes use of CVR news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

The Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association (SWAPA) have today released a statement opposing the proposal by the NTSB to use cockpit voice data to 'enact discipline on pilots.'  It was reported in yesterday's USA Today that the NTSB, who have no regulatory authority, were making a recommendation to the FAA that recordings should be used to routinely monitor crews conversations.  This, they claim, is essentiatl to improve safety by ensuring pilots are focused on their job.

Bombardier Aerospace has a $3.1 billion US deal to sell 40 of its CS300 jet airliners to Republic Airways Holdings, a U.S. operator of 1,600 daily flights under half a dozen different airline names.

Pilots face turbulence in job market news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

Following the recent economic recession pilot recruitment has been hit hard.  However, now that people are starting to talk about a recovery there are many out of work pilots waiting for the jobs to return.  The truth is that there are airlines starting to recruit, but conversly there are still those trying to reduce their workforce.

ICAO continues to push aviation carbon dioxide standard news on Flight Crew Finder Ltd

ICAO has continued to push aviation to the forefront when it comes to reucing emmisions.  Following last December's Copenhage Climate Conference a significant amount of criticism was raised due to the lack of any binding agreements.  There were also no aviation specific strategies from the summit.


CAEP, the organisaions Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection, is putting in place a Carbon Dioxide standard to be met by as early as 2013.  There are also targets to reduce global fuel burn by 2% annually between now and 2050.

Ryanair have been accused of 'acting like pirates' by French politician, Senator Michel Boutant, due to their increasing charges for some of the airports they operate from.  The charge is levied at the airport authority to ensure they maintain the airline's business.  This competition, in some regions, between neighboring airports has led to increasing charges.

HAPPY days are not quite here again in the business aviation industry, but at least there are some breaks in the clouds.

Chris GashGingerly, some business travelers are venturing back into private aircraft after the battered economy — and a public outcry against that perk of fat cats, the corporate jet — walloped the general aviation industry starting in 2008.

The signs of a small and tentative rebound are discernible. In January, business aircraft flights, as monitored by the aviation research firm Argus, rose 5.3 percent over January 2009.

I found this article and it made me smile.  This is what the 'general public' think about our rates of pay!

United Kingdom

British Airways, already stuggling under the threat of cabin crew strikes, are due back in court over a dispute about Pilot's holiday pay.  The pilots' union BALPA is due to argue the airlines attempted policy change in the Supreme Court.

The dispute centres on the method of calculation, with the airline using only basic pay and the union claiming that basic pay plus allowance, avergaed over the previous 12 weeks, should be the determining value.  BALPA claim this method is required to bring the practice in line with the Working Time Regulations.
