Aer Lingus threatens to cut 1100 jobs
Ahead of this weeks new working terms ballot of Aer Lingus employees, the Irish carrier has threatened that 1100 jobs will have to go if members do not accept the proposed cost-cutting plan. The comments have caused an angry response from IMPACT, the Union respresenting the airline's pilots and cabin crew.
The package that the airline and Unions are asking members to commit to will force 676 redundancies with a three year pay freeze and pay cuts of up to 10% for all staying with the company. Aer Lingus is concerned the the cost-cutting plan may not be accepted due to 'complacency' in the work force as some perceive the measures to be unnecesary in an improving economic climate.
The results of the ballot are not expected for at least two weeks.
