Aer Lingus jobs at risk as cabin crew reject plan
The troubled Irish airline, has offered ground-handlers, cabin crew and pilots cost cutting plans in order to try and secure the carriers future. The steps became necessary following the companies poor financial performance last year amid falling passenger numbers. The staff cost cutting plan is part of the airlines over all strategy to save €97m a year.
On Friday cabin crew voted against the plans after the pilots Union had acccepted their part of the deal. The ground handlers are still due to vote next week. 64% of the airline's flight attendants rejected the offer, after months of negotiations, despite the Unions recomendation that they accept it.
The offer to cabin crew included a three-year pay freeze, 10% pay cut and 600 voluntary redundancies. Yesterday's rejection however, threatans 1000 positions at the airline. The Chief Executive, Christoph Mueller, claimed that compulsory redundancies may now be the only way to ensure the airlines future.
