Unions. Dinosaurs Or Relevant Today?
The BA dispute got me wondering about unions, are they dinosaurs who have seen their day or a necessary defence in our industry?
In the thirty years since I joined the workforce I've been fortunate enough to never need one. I wonder though if I'd want to be associated with the likes of the BA CC union (BASSA) whose attitude and thought processes seem to be straight out of Britain in the 70's. Then I look at Ryanair and wonder if the crew there could do with some protection before realising that the majority of them are responsible for the deterioration in terms and conditions because they bought their jobs anyway so deserve to be shafted.
It's all too much for a bear of little brain.

Unions just haven't changed
Unions just haven't changed enough. Watching the Unite Union officials the other day I was transported back to the 70's. Do you have to be from the North of England to get these jobs?
The Alitalia union was just fantastic a few years ago, the airline was days from bankruptcy and they wanted to go on strike. Unite are on a looser before they start, they lost the general public's support before Christmas and I doubt if they will get it back.
I have to say that BA management have played a blinder - the no staff travel forever if you go on strike - will really concentrate minds of the cabin crew. It's nice to have principles but if your family can't go to Orlando on the cheap, why work for BA at all?
I will sit back and watch the strike with interest....
